Vietnam reaffirms support for two-state solution at international conference on Palestine issue

From July 28-30, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York (USA), the International Conference on “Peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue and implementation of the two-state solution” took place under the co-chairmanship of the Foreign Ministers of France and Saudi Arabia. Here, Vietnam reaffirmed its consistent stance in support of the two-state solution, calling on relevant parties to comply with international law, end violence and promote dialogue to build sustainable peace in the Middle East.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the event was attended by representatives of nearly 130 countries and international organizations. The conference is expected to be an important turning point in restarting the peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine.

During the first two working days, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the 79th UN General Assembly Philemon Yang, and more than 60 ministers and senior officials from countries voiced strong support for promoting the two-state solution - a key condition for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

Delegates affirmed that recognizing an independent Palestinian State while ensuring security for Israel is the only way to resolve the root causes of the conflict. In the context of the increasingly serious humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, most of the speakers called for an immediate end to unilateral actions, compliance with international law, expanded humanitarian aid and the restoration of political dialogue between the parties involved.

Speaking at the plenary session on the afternoon of July 28, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized Vietnam's consistent stance in support of the two-state solution and the right of Palestine to full membership in the United Nations. The Ambassador expressed Vietnam's consistent solidarity with the just struggle of the Palestinian people, and called on relevant parties to return to the negotiating table on the basis of respect for the UN Charter, international law, provisional measures of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and relevant UN resolutions.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet shared that, from the history of fighting against foreign invaders and gaining national independence, Vietnam recognized the State of Palestine 37 years ago and persistently supported the two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders. He affirmed that Vietnam is committed to continuing to actively participate in peacekeeping and post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Gaza, contributing to ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development for the Palestinian people.

Also on the afternoon of July 28, France, Saudi Arabia and 17 other countries and groups of countries coordinating the thematic discussion announced the “New York Joint Statement on the Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution”. The statement called for promoting a ceasefire, increasing humanitarian aid, developing a plan to rebuild Gaza and moving towards the establishment of a Palestinian State with sovereignty , economic capacity and the ability to live peacefully with Israel.

Earlier, on July 23, at the UN Security Council Open Debate on the situation in the Middle East and Palestine, Ambassador Do Hung Viet also expressed deep concern over the continued violence, especially against women and children, as well as the severe famine in Gaza. The Ambassador called for a ceasefire, the release of hostages and an end to unilateral actions that hinder humanitarian relief activities, while reaffirming Vietnam's support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the two-state solution as a sustainable way out of the current conflict.
