In the context of the Vietnam-US relationship having just been upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two sides have shown strong determination in expanding economic and trade cooperation.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan emphasized that the US is Vietnam's leading important partner and expressed his desire to further promote trade and investment relations between the two countries.

Notably, the issue of opening the market for agricultural products received special attention during the meeting.

Both sides appreciated the recent progress. The US has allowed the import of fresh coconuts from Vietnam and is in the final stages of licensing the import of passion fruit.

In contrast, Vietnam has also opened its market to grapefruit in February 2023, and peaches and nectarines from the US in July 2024.

Currently, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the USDA are actively completing procedures for a series of new products, including oranges, tangerines, plums and seedless lemons. This move shows the efforts of both sides in diversifying the list of agricultural products allowed for exchange, promising to bring great benefits to the agricultural sector and consumers of both countries.

Deputy Minister Alexis Taylor also expressed agreement with the viewpoint of the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, proposing that the two sides continue to promote related processes to open the market to more types of fruit.

In addition, the US also wants to facilitate the import of some plant products and animal feed from the US to Vietnam.

The meeting also addressed other important issues such as cooperation in biofuels, ethanol and concerns over trade defense investigations.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan proposed that the US support and invest technical and technological resources to develop the production and use of biofuel in Vietnam, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's commitments at COP26.
