On July 13, the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) announced that the French President has decided to promote the Legion d'honneur to Professor Tran Thanh Van and his wife, Professor Le Kim Ngoc.

Previously, Professor Tran Thanh Van was awarded the Chevalier Order of the Legion of Honor on February 23, 2000, while Professor Le Kim Ngoc received this medal on September 6, 2016 in Ho Chi Minh City, directly presented by French President François Hollande during his state visit to Vietnam.

On his personal page, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet expressed his joy at the news. He emphasized that this is a worthy recognition for two great French scientists of Vietnamese origin - who have devoted decades to helping Vietnamese children, strengthening relations between the two countries and supporting the international integration of Vietnamese scientists.

For many years, Professor Tran Thanh Van's name has been associated with four outstanding activities: Rencontres du Vietnam, ICISE Center, Vallet Education Scholarship and SOS Children's Villages - initiatives combining science, education and humanity, aiming at sustainable development for the young generation of Vietnam.

Professor Tran Thanh Van (from Dong Hoi, Quang Binh (formerly), now Quang Tri province), is a world-famous physicist. He was awarded the Tate Medal by the American Physical Society in 2012, one of three Asians to be honored with this award. He is the founder of the ICISE Center - which began operating in 2013 - with the goal of connecting the international scientific community, supporting students and young Vietnamese researchers to integrate into the global knowledge flow. To date, ICISE has organized nearly 200 international scientific conferences and 45 specialized schools, attracting about 12,000 scientists from more than 40 countries and territories.

Meanwhile, Professor Le Kim Ngoc was the first person to propose the concept of "thin cell slicing" (TCL) - a revolutionary invention in the field of plant biotechnology. TCL is widely applied in breeding, pure breeding and gene transfer technology to create new plant varieties.

In addition to research, she is also the President of the Association for the Support of Vietnamese Children in France, and has contributed to the construction of SOS Children's Villages in Da Lat, Dong Hoi and the Thuy Xuan Children's Protection Center (Hue). She is also an effective collaborator with Professor Tran Thanh Van in founding the Rencontres du Vietnam and building ICISE.
