Later, while passing through Sydney Harbour, King Charles visited the New South Wales state parliament to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Australia's oldest legislature.

“It is a great joy to visit Australia for the first time as King and to renew my love for this country and its people, a love that I have long cherished,” King Charles said.

It is also Charles's first international tour as King, and his first major trip since he was diagnosed with cancer.

King Charles has made a significant personal donation to create a skills training program to tackle climate change and improve higher education in small island states, including those in the Pacific , the Association of Commonwealth Universities announced on Sunday.

The programme will benefit mid-career professionals and civil servants, with the aim of retaining talent in small island states and improving their ability to respond to climate change impacts such as rising sea levels.
