India's PTI news agency reported that along with the decision to dissolve Parliament, Mr. Dissanayake called for early elections to this legislative body on November 14, nearly a year ahead of schedule.

The early election is aimed at helping Mr Dissanayake gain control of the body, as his People's Liberation Front (JVP) party holds just three seats in the 225-member legislature.

According to the official gazette of the Sri Lankan government , President Dissanayake has ordered the new Parliament to hold its first session on November 21.

The dissolution came hours after the leader appointed female MP Harini Amarasuriya from his coalition as prime minister, becoming the first woman to head a Sri Lankan government in 24 years.

Sri Lanka has also just launched a new Cabinet, considered the most streamlined in history, with only 3 JVP MPs in Parliament, including Ms. Amarasuriy, temporarily shouldering all ministerial responsibilities and will also act as caretaker ministers after Parliament is dissolved.

During his presidential campaign, Mr Dissanayake pledged to fight corruption in the country’s political system. He defeated 38 other candidates to win the presidential election on September 21, winning by 1.2 million votes over the runner-up.

This is the first election since Sri Lanka's economy collapsed in 2022 due to a severe foreign currency shortage, leaving the Indian Ocean island nation unable to pay for imports of essential goods such as fuel, medicine and gas.
