WHO: Monkeypox will not become an epidemic like Covid-19

According to Hans Kluge, Regional Director for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox currently spreading in Africa and some countries outside Africa does not pose a public health threat like the Covid-19 pandemic and will not lead to a lockdown.

At a press conference on August 20, Mr. Kluge said that by providing enough vaccine to affected countries in Africa and encouraging close monitoring of patients with monkeypox, the spread of the disease can be controlled. According to WHO officials, two years ago, WHO controlled monkeypox in Europe thanks to the direct involvement of the gay male community.

Most cases of Clade 2 monkeypox infection occur in gay and bisexual men, especially those with multiple sexual partners. Now there is a Clade 1b strain, which is thought to spread more easily through close contact. Clade 1b has killed hundreds of people in central Africa and was detected last week in Sweden.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters, Philippine Health Minister Teodoro Herbosa said on August 21 that a new case of monkeypox recently discovered in this Southeast Asian country belongs to the Clade 2 variant. The patient, a 33-year-old Filipino man with no history of travel outside the Philippines, is recovering in the hospital.

In a related development, Emergent BioSolutions said it will donate 50,000 doses of its smallpox vaccine to the Democratic Republic of Congo and other affected countries, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, to address the current smallpox outbreak. Emergent's ACAM2000 vaccine, approved for smallpox, has been used as a monkeypox vaccine, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved its application for use due to concerns about more side effects and risks than the Jynneos vaccine from Bavarian Nordic A/S (a Danish biotech company). Jynneos is approved in the U.S. for both human smallpox and monkeypox.
