Among the dead were four officials and an eight-year-old girl. Thalduwa said police had opened an investigation into the accident, which occurred at a sporting event organised by the Sri Lankan army.

The remaining races were cancelled following the crash. Around 45,000 spectators had gathered for the event, which was held for the first time in five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Sri Lanka's economic crisis.

Just before the accident, Army Commander Vikum Liyanage announced that the event would be open to spectators free of charge to promote the speed sport.
