According to The Gamer , Call of Duty fans have been waiting for a standalone Zombies game for years, but it hasn't happened yet. However, according to one developer's LinkedIn profile, their dream seemed to have come true more than a decade ago.

According to MP1ST, former Raven Software lead designer Michael Gummelt lists in his resume that he worked on an 'unreleased online Call of Duty: Zombies game' from 2011-2012, and says it was 'cancelled when an Activision unit that held the intellectual property for the game wanted it back'.

The standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game was canceled 10 years ago

While Gummelt didn't name the unit, it's safe to assume it's Treyarch. Zombies first appeared in Call of Duty: World at War as a secret mode, and then became a full-fledged part of Treyarch's future games, starting with the first Black Ops . Treyarch "owns" this part of the series and continues to develop it to this day.

The standalone Zombies game was also canceled in 2012, the same year Black Ops 2 was released, which was also when Treyarch expanded on the Zombies mode. Other than its short existence, no other details about the game have been revealed. More than 10 years later, Activision has yet to create a standalone Zombies installment, instead integrating it into other Call of Duty games.

That's not the only detail on Gummelt's LinkedIn profile, however, as he also reveals that he was the lead designer on an 'unreleased sequel to a classic IP from game developer Raven', but it was scrapped when Call of Duty Warzone launched and became a success. While there are few details, it's possible to guess what this classic IP is.

Before becoming one of the main studios behind Call of Duty, Raven was best known for the Hexen/Heretic series, which were Doom-style shooters set in medieval fantasy, aka “boomer shooters” with magic. Fans have been clamoring for the series’ return for decades, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer even sent the internet into a frenzy by wearing a Hexen T-shirt.

Michael Gummelt is currently the director of experience at ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online . He left Raven Software in 2021 after 23 years, with his last projects being Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.
