BTO-The Southern Institute of Ecology (under the Institute of Applied Materials Science ) has just reported the results of a study on silver-backed chevrotains using camera traps at the Long Song - Da Bac Protective Forest Management Board (PFMB) (Tuy Phong).

As a result, the rare, endangered and endemic silver-backed chevrotain has not been recorded in Long Song – Da Bac Nature Reserve. There are 24 other species of birds and animals recorded, including rare and endangered species such as the black-shanked douc Pygathrix nigripes, the pangolin Manis javanica, the peacock Pavo muticus, the goat Capricornis sumatraensis, the pig-tailed macaque Macaca leonina, etc.

According to the Southern Institute of Ecology, Long Song - Da Bac Forest Reserve in particular and Binh Thuan province in general possess rich and unique biodiversity resources, with potential for ecotourism. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen forest patrol and protection activities and develop a periodic biodiversity monitoring plan to promptly assess and update the status and changes of biodiversity, providing information for conservation and sustainable development.

Previously, the Southern Institute of Ecology closely coordinated with the Long Song - Da Bac Forest Protection Management Board to deploy field activities to install camera traps to collect data in the forest area of the Long Song - Da Bac Forest Protection Management Board from March to May 2022.

The camera trap sites were spaced approximately 500 m apart. One camera trap was installed at each camera trap site. The camera traps were attached to tree trunks at a height of 20 - 40 cm above the ground to maximize the probability of recording the target species of the study. A total of 36 camera traps were installed.
