Matcha tea, originating from Japan, is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and ground into a powder. It is gaining popularity due to its unique growing conditions, high nutritional content, delicious taste, and low calorie content.

Unlike regular green tea, matcha plants are shaded with bamboo mats during growth, resulting in higher chlorophyll content and giving the leaves their bright green color.

The polyphenol compounds in matcha are known to protect the body against disease.

How to make and note when drinking matcha green tea

To make matcha tea, sift 1-2 tablespoons of matcha powder into a bowl, add hot water, and whisk until frothy. Although matcha is generally safe, it does have a higher caffeine content.

People sensitive to caffeine, including pregnant women, should limit their intake. Tea should be consumed away from meals to avoid affecting iron absorption.

Also, when buying matcha, look for a bright green color, smooth texture, and suitable packaging to limit exposure to air and light. High-quality matcha will have a fresh grassy smell with a hint of sweetness.
