It looks like a pair of regular glasses, but retail giant Amazon's wearable device could replace handheld scanners and cut delivery times for each shipment.
According to Reuters, the world's leading retail group Amazon is in the process of developing smart glasses for drivers. This smart glass model not only displays accurate maps to destinations, but also provides guidance information inside the building, such as walking down the elevator and displaying warnings about gates or dangerous dogs.

No details have been leaked yet, but the device — like Meta's Ray-Bans — will reportedly have a small built-in display to display important information. They could also provide audio guidance, like Amazon's current Echo Frames, and use a built-in camera to take photos, replacing the handheld device currently used.
According to a Reuters report, these smart glasses may only save a few seconds on a typical delivery, or a few minutes if the driver gets lost. But when the average driver handles about 300 packages a day, and with millions of packages delivered around the world every day, those seconds add up to a significant amount of time for drivers to be able to handle a few more packages each day.
Last year, Amazon launched a drone delivery program. According to the retail giant, 90% of packages delivered to residential areas weigh less than 3.8 kg, and 90% of them are always located in warehouses less than 8 km away from the destination. A drone can carry up to 4.5 kg, and the cost of delivery is under 3 USD per package, instead of 16-20 USD for traditional delivery.
Although the project has not been made public, Reuters reported that several anonymous employees have confirmed its existence. Those sources also said that the smart glasses could take several more years to develop, or may never be released if testing does not work out.
Comfort was a concern, but when ZDNET senior reviews editor Kerry Wan tried Meta's latest wearable, he found the glasses comfortable enough to replace his prescription glasses.
Amazon is also working on a smart glass that will make deliveries faster, just like the drone delivery program the retailer recently rolled out. Thanks to the convenience of drones, packages can reach customers in less than an hour. This is part of Amazon’s effort to reduce delivery times for customers, especially at the end of the process.
Smart glasses have struggled to make it to market, so it will be interesting to see if Amazon can make them useful for delivery workers.
