Apple is developing a waterproof iPhone

According to a patent granted last week by Apple, the company is developing an iPhone model that can be used underwater.

The iPhone and many Android smartphones are now water-resistant and meet certain standards that allow for an IP68 rating. However, phone manufacturers do not cover water damage on smartphones under warranty.

Apple says the iPhone 15 lineup is water-resistant to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. That’s definitely higher than the IP68 standard, but that doesn’t mean you can take your iPhone 15 into the bath or shower or go diving with it without putting it in a specially designed waterproof case. If something goes wrong, the warranty won’t cover it.

According to PhoneArena , a new patent granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office last week shows that Apple is developing a new version of the iPhone that can operate underwater.

The new patent, titled “Underwater User Interface,” also describes how Apple could tweak the iOS platform to make it easier to use when the iPhone is underwater. An illustration in the patent shows that iPhone users could zoom in and out of the camera by pressing the volume button instead of using the touchscreen.

If Apple does release a truly water-resistant iPhone, hopefully it will come with a warranty that covers water damage. It’s unclear when the water-resistant iPhone will be released, but if it does, it would be a great feature to have.
