ASEAN ready to adopt Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030 is on track to be completed by March this year, said Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030 is on track to be completed by March this year, paving the way for its adoption by the bloc’s leaders at the 46th ASEAN Summit scheduled to take place in Malaysia next May, said Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.

According to a VNA correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, speaking to the press after attending the 31st ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Retreat in Johor state (Malaysia), Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn said the AEC Strategic Plan 2026-2030 is ready for approval next May.

Meanwhile, according to Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who chaired the 31st AEM, the AEC Strategic Plan was developed from extensive meetings with various stakeholders to create an AEC that is action-oriented, sustainable, dynamic, adaptive, agile and inclusive.

At the 31st AEM Retreat, Mr. Tengku Zafrul said that a number of important ASEAN initiatives were approved, especially the implementation of the roadmap for the ASEAN Digital Enterprise Identification Number and the negotiating principles for the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Intellectual Property Rights Cooperation (AFAIPC) 2.0.

Other initiatives include the ASEAN Pharmaceutical Regulatory Framework Agreement (APRFA), which is expected to be signed at the 57th AEM in September 2025, he said.

Mr. Tengku Zafrul stressed that all these documents lay important foundations to create a more competitive economy, as well as facilitate trade and business in the region.

Malaysia’s agenda as ASEAN Chair includes enhancing intra-ASEAN trade and investment and spearheading efforts to explore and expand economic cooperation and partnerships beyond the ASEAN region./.
