Poland announces raid on Russian spy network

Poland's security service says it has raided a Russian spy network in cooperation with Czech intelligence.

"The Polish Internal Security Agency is conducting operations as part of an investigation into Russian espionage activities against countries and organizations of the European Union (EU)," agency spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski wrote on social media on March 28.

They carried out raids in the capital Warsaw and the southern city of Tychy, he added.

"The spy network aims to achieve the foreign policy goals set by the Kremlin, including weakening Poland's position in the international arena, discrediting Ukraine and the image of EU institutions," Dobrzynski said.

"The operations were carried out as a result of international cooperation between the security agency and a number of European partners, especially the Czech Republic," he stressed.

The Czech Republic announced on March 27 that it had broken up a Moscow-funded network that aimed to spread Russian propaganda and influence across Europe.

Prague said the group used the Voice of Europe news site to spread information aimed at preventing the EU from sending aid to Ukraine to confront Russia.

According to Dobrzynski, the security services' operation began with an investigation earlier this year that led to charges against a Polish citizen suspected of spying for Russia.

"This person, who is from the Polish parliament and the EU, carried out tasks authorized and funded by Russian intelligence," he said. These tasks notably included "propaganda, disinformation and political provocation. Their goal was to build Russian influence in Europe."

Russia has not commented on the above information.
