Thai Binh General Hospital is the unit assigned to collect blood products for medical examination and treatment at the unit and some provincial and regional hospitals. According to the hospital's report, in the first 6 months of the year, the total amount of blood collected in the southern region of the province was nearly 5,350 units, equivalent to more than 1.5 million ml of blood, of which the amount of blood used by the hospital for emergency and treatment was more than 5,130 units. The remaining blood was transferred to other units for use. Doctor Tran Thi Thanh Hoa, Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Thai Binh General Hospital shared: Previously, each month, the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion coordinated with units and localities to collect about 1 - 1.2 thousand units of blood to meet the needs of emergency and treatment for patients at the hospital and hospitals in the southern region of the province. When there are emergency cases requiring a large amount of blood transfusion or an increase in obstetric and gynecological emergencies, the amount of blood needed will be higher. However, since July 1, the reception of donated blood has encountered some difficulties and is passive due to the dependence on donors and patients' relatives coming to donate blood at Thai Binh General Hospital. To maintain the blood supply for emergency and treatment work, the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has organized blood collection on weekdays, including Saturdays and Sundays. The work is more strenuous and difficult, but for the health and lives of patients, the staff in the Department still work with the highest spirit, trying to ensure the blood supply for emergency and treatment work.
Blood is an invaluable product and cannot be produced. The amount of blood for emergency and treatment depends on the amount of donated blood. Therefore, when blood donation activities have not been implemented in localities, the collection of blood reserves is difficult, so medical examination and treatment are at risk of being affected.
Do not let the blood mobilization chain from the community be "broken"
Faced with the above situation, in order to ensure blood supply for emergency and treatment, the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Thai Binh General Hospital has had many solutions. In addition to organizing blood collection at the unit, the Hospital has also asked for support from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, but the Institute has only been able to allocate a part of the demand. In addition, the Hospital has also promoted propaganda through social networks and patients' relatives to spread the amount of donated blood; sent open letters to agencies and units in the province, mobilized live blood banks; coordinated with universities and colleges to organize voluntary blood donation campaigns... With the above solutions, the amount of blood collected is currently basically enough to meet the needs of emergency and treatment. However, these are also temporary solutions, sometimes passive because there are patients with rare blood types that are difficult to mobilize urgently because students - the core force of the live blood bank - are on summer vacation.
Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Hoa added: The demand for blood is increasing, especially at the end of the year. Therefore, in parallel with the solutions being implemented, there needs to be long-term solutions and more active participation from all levels, sectors, localities and units such as: Strengthening the steering committee for voluntary blood donation at all levels according to the directive of the National Blood Donation Steering Committee dated July 21, 2025; promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to participate in voluntary blood donation; establishing zalo and facebook groups about blood type communities... to ensure that the blood supply for emergency and treatment of patients is not interrupted.
