Riot in women's prison in Honduras, at least 41 people killed

Spokesperson Yuri Mora said authorities were working to identify the bodies at the Centro Femenino de Adaptacion Social, a 900-person women's prison about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the capital Tegucigalpa, where some died from burns, while others died from gunshot wounds.

Delma Ordonez, president of the inmates’ families association, said a fight broke out at the prison early Tuesday between two rival gangs, Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha. Mora said authorities could not yet confirm details of what happened.

Images released by local media showed black smoke billowing from a prison building. Relatives of inmates gathered outside the prison late Tuesday seeking news of the victims.

"I'm looking for information about what happened to my daughter, but they haven't informed us yet," a woman named Ligia Rodriguez said in a television interview.

Honduras has seen deadly prison incidents before. Eighteen inmates died in a gang war at a prison in 2019, and more than 350 died in a fire in 2012.
