US Election 2024: Two candidates focus on economic policy to win over voters

With less than two weeks to go before the US officially enters the quadrennial presidential election, poll results show a fierce competition between Democratic candidate, US Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.

According to a VNA correspondent in Washington, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, with a margin of error of 2%, shows that US Vice President Kamala Harris is maintaining a 3 percentage point lead over former President Donald Trump nationwide. Specifically, Ms. Harris won 46% of the votes and Mr. Trump won 43%. In the top issues of concern to voters, former President Trump leads his opponent Harris on immigration and the economy , with a gap of 48% - 35% and 46% - 38%, respectively. In contrast, the current Vice President has an advantage in handling threats to democracy as well as health care and abortion, with a support rate of 42% - 35%. Meanwhile, over the weekend, Mr. Trump surpassed Ms. Harris for the first time in The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s election forecast, with the model showing the Republican candidate with a 52% chance of winning compared to 48% for his Democratic rival. With the race so close, both candidates are targeting voters who need to win. In an interview on October 22, Vice President Harris proposed a plan to double the number of registered apprenticeships, lower hiring standards for government positions, and provide forgivable loans of up to $20,000 to 1 million small businesses.
