This marks a significant shift in the electoral landscape, with Ms. Harris trying to assert herself with voters. While Mr. Trump still maintains his support on economic issues, Ms. Harris is more highly regarded for her leadership ability.

According to AFP/Arabnews on August 5, a new poll shows that Kamala Harris, who is about to announce her vice presidential candidate, has a slight lead over former US President Donald Trump in the race to the White House, marking a significant change in the electoral landscape.

In a CBS News/YouGov poll, Harris now leads Trump by 1 percentage point nationally, reversing the 5 percentage point advantage Trump had over President Joe Biden before he abandoned his re-election bid.

With the Nov. 5 election looming, Harris has closed the gap that Trump had built. While Trump, who shocked voters in 2016 but was defeated by Biden in 2020, still maintains strong support among voters on economic issues, Harris is racing to assert herself with voters.

A key moment is coming when Ms. Harris announces her choice for a “running mate” in her historic bid to become the first female president of the United States. Many expect Ms. Harris to choose a white man, possibly a moderate Democrat, to balance the vote and counter Republican criticism that she is too left-leaning.

Harris’s vice presidential shortlist includes three leading figures: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. These figures visited Harris in Washington DC on August 4.

The decision will be a reflection of Harris’s planning process, according to pollster Amy Walter. While Harris has been doing well in the polls, Trump still has support from voters on economic issues.

The poll found that only 25% of voters expect the financial situation to improve if Ms. Harris wins, compared with 45% for Mr. Trump. However, Ms. Harris is rated higher on leadership than Mr. Trump.

Democrats believe that if the vote is a referendum on Mr Trump rather than the state of the economy, they have a real chance of winning. Meanwhile, Mr Trump has used the Republican convention to project his strong image, but President Biden’s exit and Ms Harris’s rapid start are creating a major challenge for him.

Earlier on August 3, Ms. Harris's campaign said Mr. Trump was "afraid" to debate her after he turned down a live televised debate on ABC, but was willing to debate on Fox News, a television channel that has supported him for many years.
