Faced with a wave of widespread layoffs, many experienced workers are still at risk of being replaced. The question is: Will you be the one eliminated, or seize the opportunity to break through?

Since the beginning of 2025, a series of corporations in the US, Europe and Asia have announced thousands of job cuts. The technology industry alone recorded more than 61,000 job losses as of May 2025, according to statistics from a global layoff tracking platform (Layoffs.fyi). This situation has also spread to "big guys" such as Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and recently Intel with plans to cut up to 20% of its staff.
The reasons are said to be due to the impact of global economic fluctuations, business model transformation, and especially the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). According to a survey in early 2025 by the World Economic Forum, about 41% of businesses globally predict that they will reduce their workforce within the next 5 years due to the development of AI.
In Vietnam, the manufacturing, e-commerce and technology sectors have also seen many layoffs. This shows that experience is no longer a safety shield and youth is not enough of a “weapon” to defend oneself, especially when AI is replacing many traditional jobs.

In that context, whether or not to be replaced depends largely on the ability of workers to adapt and proactively change. Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Phuong, Director of Human Resources Solutions at Talentnet Company, commented: “Talents will always be appreciated, but in the current context, good ability is no longer a 'shield' to protect workers from the risk of losing their jobs.”
Sharing the same view, Ms. Pham Phuong Thu, Director of Human Resources of NIC Global, emphasized that employees need to abandon the mentality of safety and start taking initiative in their careers. Instead of doing repetitive tasks, now innovation and career advancement are the keys to breakthrough.
“You have to be the first one to plan your career. Learn new skills, stay up to date with industry trends, and be ready to adapt – that’s how you become irreplaceable in the eyes of employers,” Thu shared.

Amidst the storm of layoffs sweeping through, proactively investing in yourself through education and expanding your professional network is a necessary direction to improve competitiveness, especially when jobs without innovation are always among the most easily replaced.
