Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on January 18 unveiled a new strategic underground storage facility built on Iran's southern coast to house a fleet of fast attack craft and other vessels.

Iranian state television reported that the new base was built at a depth of 500 meters, showing images of tunnels with a long row of what were believed to be new versions of the Taregh-class speedboats capable of launching cruise missiles, according to Reuters.

Iranian state television also showed IRGC Commander Hossein Salami visiting the new secret base during combat drills, noting that it was one of many underground bases built for ships capable of launching long-range missiles and waging war from afar.

Commander Salami also claimed that the new base houses a significant number of Iranian fast attack craft, in addition to vessels equipped with torpedo launchers, according to Press TV. He also stressed that the underground naval base represents only a small part of the capabilities of the IRGC's naval forces.

"We assure the great nation of Iran that its young people are capable of gaining victory and honor from a naval battle against both small and big enemies," Salami said.

Mr. Salami asserted that the IRGC's naval forces are now capable of fighting a war from both near and far ranges, and can monitor multiple layers of offensive and strategic defense.

Iran unveiled the new naval base at a time when tensions with the United States are expected to rise. Iranian leaders fear that US President-elect Donald Trump could empower Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attack Iran's nuclear sites and tighten US sanctions on Iran's oil industry through Trump's "maximum pressure" policy, according to Reuters.
