Signs such as headache, nausea or weakness in the limbs are sometimes warnings from the brain about the risk of stroke in children.
13 year old boy had a stroke
At noon in early June, TBC (13 years old, residing in Son Tra district, Da Nang city) was practicing performing arts at school when he suddenly fainted. He was quickly taken to Da Nang hospital in a deep coma, with respiratory failure - an emergency symptom of severe brain damage.
CT scans of the brain showed that the child had a large intracranial hemorrhage, with the blood clot severely compressing the brain tissue. Immediately, neurosurgeons in collaboration with the anesthesia and resuscitation department performed an emergency craniotomy to remove the blood clot and relieve the pressure.
Then, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) continued to detect congenital vascular malformations with aneurysms - one of the silent causes of stroke in children.
The medical team performed radical surgery to remove the deformity and prevent rebleeding. Fortunately, after treatment, the patient regained consciousness, could move his limbs almost normally, and was discharged from the hospital.

Warning signs of stroke in children
Dr. Tra Tan Hoanh - Head of Neurosurgery Department, Da Nang Hospital - warned: "Stroke is no longer a disease of adults only. In recent years, the number of cases of cerebral hemorrhage in children that we have received has been increasing, mostly due to congenital vascular malformations. Many cases are only discovered when complications occur."
In particular, because young children cannot clearly express their symptoms, early recognition by parents is a key factor in saving lives and limiting sequelae.
Doctors advise parents not to be subjective with the following signs: prolonged headache, nausea, vomiting of unknown cause, weakness in limbs, convulsions, sudden loss of consciousness.
Parents need to take their children for regular health check-ups. For children with suspicious signs, a cerebral angiogram should be performed to screen for congenital malformations.
When the child shows emergency symptoms, take him/her immediately to a specialized neurological medical facility with modern equipment for timely diagnosis and intervention.
