According to Bola, Emil Audero is the next notable name that the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) is targeting to strengthen its squad. This goalkeeper is currently playing for Serie A club Como and has played for the Italian youth teams.
Emil Audero has Italian nationality but was born in Indonesia, with an Indonesian father. Therefore, the procedures for this goalkeeper to become naturalized and play for the Indonesian national team are very favorable. The problem lies in Audero's will.
The Indonesian Football Federation has been eyeing the 27-year-old star for a few years now. However, they have not been able to convince Audero to choose the Southeast Asian team.
The Indonesian Football Federation wants to recruit a goalkeeper who used to play for Juventus and Inter Milan just as a reserve.
The goalkeeper born in 1992 has played for Juventus, Sampdoria and Inter Milan, and has represented Italy at all levels of the youth national team. There is no chance for him to compete for a place in the Italian national team because Audero is still the main goalkeeper for Como.
Bola also revealed the remarkable information that Audero is only considered as a backup option for the number 1 goalkeeper of the archipelago team in case he chooses to become an Indonesian citizen. Arya Sinulingga, a member of the PSSI executive board, confirmed this.
"We are thinking about what will happen if Maarten Paes gets injured. Whether we like it or not, we have to find a good enough replacement. The Indonesian team needs a high-quality reserve goalkeeper, especially in case we make it to the fourth round of the World Cup qualifiers in Asia. We have to do that," said the leader of the Indonesian Football Federation.
Currently, Maarten Paes, a Dutch-born goalkeeper who plays in the United States for FC Dallas, is coach Shin Tae-yong's number one choice for the Indonesian national team. His backups include Ernando Ari, Nadeo Argawinata and Muhammad Riyandi.
All three of these homegrown players have impressed at youth level but they cannot compete with Paes. In the event that Audero chooses the Indonesian national team, the chances for the "homegrown" goalkeepers will be even smaller.
