Moflin is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and is capable of displaying more than 4 million different personality traits. The robot recognizes its owner through their most frequent interactions, and remembers and adapts to caring behaviors such as petting and talking, gradually learning their preferences.
According to Ms. Erina Ichikawa - Head of Moflin development team, the product was originally designed to target women - who often have a need for emotional companionship. "We wanted to create a little friend who can comfort and support you even when you are having difficulties at work or in your personal life," Ms. Ichikawa shared.
The idea for Moflin began when a Casio engineer presented a prototype robot that was meant to replicate the cuteness of small animals. The robot was officially launched last November and quickly became a hit, with over 7,000 units sold as of March this year – a success that far exceeded initial expectations.
According to Casio, the product is particularly popular with female customers in their 30s and 40s, many of whom even take Moflin with them on trips. "Users feel that each Moflin is a unique individual, like a real animal, because they have their own emotions, personalities, and even different sleep cycles," said Ms. Ichikawa.
Moflin is currently on sale for 59,400 yen ($400). Casio also offers additional services such as a beauty salon that specializes in washing and grooming the robot.
