Therefore, from now until September 2024, the flood situation in these two areas will be at a high level. In September, October and November, the flood area will shift to the provinces in the Central region.
"This time of year is also when the La Nina phenomenon begins to operate, so there is a high risk of especially heavy rains in the Central region," Mr. Huong warned.
In Muong Pon 1 village, Muong Pon commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province, a flash flood occurred, killing and leaving at least 7 people missing. The cause was that from the night of July 24 to the morning of July 25, in the provinces of Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau... heavy rain continued to occur (in Dien Bien alone, the rain was up to 293mm).
Previously, due to heavy rain, from the afternoon of July 23 to the morning of July 24, in Hanoi, 1 person was swept away by floodwaters while crossing a stream, in Mai Son and Thuan Chau districts (Son La province), 9 people died and went missing (due to floods and landslides).
In addition, some communes along the Bui River, in Chuong My District (Hanoi) were severely flooded due to prolonged rain combined with the release of floodwaters from hydroelectric plants in the Northwest region; a billion-dollar villa in Dong Vo Hamlet, Phu Man Commune (Quoc Oai - Hanoi) collapsed and was completely destroyed on the morning of July 24 due to a landslide.
Currently, Son La and Hoa Binh hydropower plants are having to open 5 flood gates.
