Athlete Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi announced that she will go to Korea to compete in the Professional Billiards Association (PBA) tournament system. PBA is a unit specializing in organizing carom competitions in Korea and some other countries but is not affiliated with the World Carom Federation (UMB) system.
Before Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi, Vietnam has a number of names currently competing in the PBA system. They are Nguyen Duc Anh Chien, Ngo Dinh Nai, and Nguyen Quoc Nguyen.
Signing a contract with the PBA means that Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi will not be able to participate in tournaments managed by UMB. Among them, the most important tournaments of carom billiards are the carom World Cup and the world championship.
Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi is a top 4 billiards player in the world.
In September 2024, more than 200 players, including more than 30 Vietnamese athletes, were banned from participating in UMB tournaments for one year. The reason was that they participated in a tournament of PBA - an organization not recognized by UMB - in Hanoi . This ban caused a lot of controversy.
Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi is Vietnam's number 1 carom player. According to the latest rankings released by UMB on October 10, Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi is ranked 4th in the world. This female athlete once played for the Vietnamese team at the 32nd SEA Games (2023) and won a silver medal.
Last September, the 1999-born player won a bronze medal at the World Championship in France. Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi then had problems with the Vietnam Billiards and Snooker Federation (VBSF) regarding the organization of competitions and support for members participating in international tournaments.
"Actually, I have never been sure if I am on the right track or not? But I believe that every choice, every path will bring me valuable lessons and experiences. A new arena is much more difficult - I hope everyone will always be by my side and support me," Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi wrote on social media.
