Cuba's National Agency for Statistics and Information said on July 25 that in the first six months of 2025, the Caribbean island nation welcomed only 981,856 international tourists, down 25% compared to the same period last year.

Statistics show that Canada remains the main source market, with 428,125 visitors, although this is only 75% of the number in 2024.

Besides, other source markets such as Russia, Germany, France and Spain all recorded sharp declines of 56.5%, 64.1%, 73.6% and 73.8% respectively.

American tourists to Cuba also recorded an 80.6% decrease, while the number of visitors from the Cuban diaspora dropped 77.6% to just 120,423 tourists.

In this context, Cuban Tourism Minister Juan Carlos García Granda stressed the need to stimulate regional connectivity to revive tourism , saying that Cuba is looking to strengthen traditional markets such as Colombia, Mexico and Brazil, and explore opportunities in Asia and the Middle East, regions that have so far seen very few tourists .

Tourism is key to the Cuban economy, contributing to gross domestic product (GDP) and generating foreign currency, second only to health services and remittances.

According to official figures, in 2022, Cuba welcomed 1.6 million tourists, this number increased to 2.4 million people in 2023, but by 2024 it decreased to 2.2 million people.

In a recent report on tourism, Cuban officials and experts assessed that the current economic crisis is a factor in the decline of the industry, as it hinders the supply of hotels, causes transportation difficulties due to fuel shortages and affects rental properties due to daily power outages.

These factors will make it difficult for the Cuban tourism industry to achieve its goal of welcoming 2.6 million international visitors this year./.
