On the morning of August 30, the People's Court of Thua Thien Hue province opened the first instance trial of Dau Quang Dung (born in 1957, residing in Thai Nguyen city, Thai Nguyen province) for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
According to the indictment, Dau Quang Dung was a former officer of the Supreme People's Procuracy.
In 2019, Ms. NTNL's son, LQHP, was prosecuted and temporarily detained by the Hue City Police Department for the crimes of "Rape", "Intentionally causing injury" and "Illegal detention". Ms. L wants to find a good lawyer to defend her son .
Around the end of 2019, introduced by her nephew, Ms. L went to Dau Quang Dung's house in Ha Tinh City. After explaining the case to Dung, Ms. L asked Dung to appeal for her son's innocence .
After listening to Ms. L's presentation, Dung said that this case was unjust and promised to help her influence the Central Government to appeal for justice .
Dung introduced himself as a doctor of law and worked at the Supreme People's Procuracy, so Ms. L trusted him and agreed to pay all costs to appeal his innocence .
In January 2020, Dung contacted two lawyers in Hanoi and provided Ms. L's phone number for these lawyers to contact. After that, these two lawyers directly contacted Ms. L and registered to defend P.
During the discussion about the case, Dung told Ms. L that the case handled by Hue City Police was a wrongful conviction and that her son was not guilty. Dung promised to influence the central government to the Hue City prosecution agencies and repeatedly informed Ms. L that her son would be released .
Continuously from January 2020 to March 2021, Dung asked Ms. L to transfer money to cover the costs of appealing for justice. Trusting Dung's promises, Ms. L transferred money to Dung 10 times, a total of more than 2.5 billion VND .
Dung only transferred a total of 70 million VND to 2 lawyers for defense costs. Dung embezzled more than 2.4 billion VND for personal use .
At the trial, Dung did not accept the indictment, did not answer questions or debate with the prosecutor's representative .
The People's Court of Thua Thien Hue province sentenced Dau Quang Dung to 13 years in prison for "Fraudulent appropriation of property", plus 12 years in prison in the verdict dated June 13, 2023 of the High People's Court in Hanoi, the total sentence the defendant must serve is 25 years in prison .
