Mr Thaksin began his first day of freedom in his homeland, 15 years after living in exile following his overthrow by the royalist military.

Thaksin is eligible for parole due to his age, health and time served and has been held in hospital for health reasons.

The car carrying him was seen moving towards his family's residence in Bangkok about 25 minutes later.

His lawyer Winyat Chartmontri told Reuters that Thaksin had completed the parole process and was officially released.

Thailand's popular former Prime Minister Thaksin had a huge influence on politics for two decades. However, he has confirmed that he has retired from politics.
