Archaeological site in Zug

Archaeologists at a quarry in the Swiss canton of Zug are carefully excavating walls built some 2,000 years ago during the Roman Empire.

The walls appear to enclose an area of at least 500 square meters and belong to a complex built with several different rooms.

"This is a wonderful archaeological discovery," the Independent UK newspaper quoted the announcement of the Zug State Office for Monuments and Archaeology, adding that the relic will provide important information about the Romans in the mountainous region of Central Switzerland during ancient Roman times.

Scientists note that the elevated location of the archaeological site may have allowed people of the time to have a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Archaeologists also unearthed a large number of iron nails here, showing that in ancient times there was a wooden structure above the walls.

The function of the building surrounded by the walls is still unclear, and researchers are working to find an answer to this question.

"Is this a villa with a great view, or a temple? To find out the answer, we will continue our research," the experts said.

Dr. Gishan Schaeren, head of the Prehistory and Prehistoric Archaeology Department of the Zug Archaeological Association, notes that the last time Roman buildings of similar size were excavated and studied in Cham-Heiligkreuz (Zug) was nearly 100 years ago.
