Reuters reported on November 1 that Chinese police have arrested an employee of the Qingdao Brewery for allegedly urinating into a raw material tank, after the incident "caused a storm" on social media and affected the stock of the country's famous beer brand.

The incident occurred on October 19 at the Qingdao Brewery in Pingdu City, Shandong Province. In a statement released on November 1, the investigation team of the Pingdu government said that the employee was arrested on October 22 on charges of intentionally damaging company property.

The worker urinated into a malt tank that had been emptied earlier, according to the statement. Another worker discovered the incident on camera and posted the footage to Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

After the incident caused a stir, authorities sealed the affected materials and removed them from the production line.

Tsingtao Brewery, one of China's biggest beer brands, said it has taken measures to eliminate "loopholes in the management of raw material transportation".

These measures include using fully enclosed trucks “so that there is no contact between employees and raw materials throughout the process”, as well as implementing a “behavioral recognition monitoring system” in the factory, powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Statements from the Chinese brewer and local government also spread quickly on social media, with some netizens saying the damage to the brand was too late to reverse.
