AFP news agency on January 27 quoted a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry saying that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had a "frank, substantive and effective" dialogue in Bangkok (Thailand).

Accordingly, on January 26 and 27, the two officials had a dialogue on the implementation of the agreements reached at the summit between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco (USA) in November 2023 and on the proper handling of important and sensitive issues in China-US relations.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo and director of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that Taiwan is "China's internal affair, and the regional elections in Taiwan cannot change the fundamental fact that Taiwan is part of China."

According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the biggest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the so-called "Taiwan independence" movement, and the biggest challenge to China-US relations is also the "Taiwan independence" movement.

Xinhua news agency quoted Mr. Wang Yi as saying that the two countries should treat each other equally, seek common ground and respect each other's core interests.

The two sides agreed to establish a joint working group on anti-drug cooperation, hold the first meeting of the China-US intergovernmental dialogue mechanism on artificial intelligence (AI), and take further steps to expand people-to-people exchanges.

On the US side, the White House issued a statement saying that the meeting was part of an effort to maintain open dialogue channels and manage responsible competition in the relationship under the direction of the two countries' leaders.

Mr. Sullivan stressed that although the US and China are competing, the two countries need to prevent the transition to conflict or confrontation. The two sides discussed next steps on a range of areas of cooperation.

Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Wang noted recent progress in resuming communications between the two militaries and the importance of maintaining these channels. They also discussed next steps toward holding a US-China dialogue on AI.

The two sides welcomed the progress in counter-narcotics cooperation. In addition, the two sides had frank, substantive and constructive discussions on global and regional issues, including those related to the war in Ukraine, the Middle East, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the South China Sea and Myanmar.

On the Taiwan issue, Mr. Sullivan stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
