German media reported on May 26 that investigators are examining whether the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia running under the Baltic Sea have any evidence related to Ukraine.

Authorities are currently assessing whether the attack on the gas pipeline could have been carried out by an independent Ukrainian commando group, or alternatively by a unit backed by the Ukrainian government .

The possibility of a false flag operation, used by Russia to blame others, has also not been completely ruled out.

Separate reports have suggested that a Russian naval vessel was photographed near the Nord Stream gas pipeline shortly before a mysterious explosion last September.

The pipelines have been at the center of geopolitical tensions as Russia has cut off gas supplies to Europe in retaliation for sanctions over its war with Ukraine. Western countries were quick to blame Russia for the explosions under the Baltic Sea, while the Kremlin accused the West of sabotage.

Earlier, on May 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it had summoned the ambassadors of Germany, Sweden and Denmark to protest what Moscow called "completely fruitless" investigations into the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

On May 23, TASS news agency reported that Director of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Bruno Kahl said that currently no intelligence agency can name the people who carried out the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines.
