Nearly 20% of Chinese people use AI, startups flourish

(CLO) According to Chinese government data, the number of users of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the country reached 230 million by the end of June, as a series of startups and large tech companies quickly offered their large language model (LLM) services.

According to a report released on November 30 by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), about one in every six Internet users in the country is using a GenAI product.

Chinese tech giant Baidu's Ernie Bot is the most popular GenAI product in the country, with an 11.5% user share. It is followed by OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, with 7% and 3.8% market shares, respectively, although the two services are not officially available in mainland China.

GenAI refers to algorithms that are capable of generating new content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos . LLM is the core technology behind GenAI services like ChatGPT.

The report found that nearly two-thirds of GenAI users in China use LLM services to answer questions, while the remaining one-third use these services as work assistants, creating meeting minutes and slides.

As of November, more than 309 GenAI products had registered for LLM with China's Internet regulator. Beijing topped the list with 96 products, followed by Shanghai with 84. The report also said that more than 190 services had been approved and were commercially available to the public as of July this year.

The surge in GenAI users in China signals the rapid growth of LLM technology in the world’s second-largest economy . It comes as Chinese companies are trying to close the gap with the US, after OpenAI made global headlines with the release of ChatGPT in 2022.

Major tech companies in China have launched their own LLM programs for both consumers and businesses, while the rise of AI startups such as Baichuan, Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax is attracting strong attention from users and investors.

Nearly 200 commercial LLM programs in China have attracted more than 600 million registered users, according to statistics cited by an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in October.

However, Chinese AI companies are facing a major hardware challenge, as Washington imposes restrictions on US suppliers such as Nvidia, limiting the sale of advanced graphics processors to China.
