Increased cases of hemorrhagic stroke in children

On June 16, doctors at Da Nang Hospital successfully performed surgery to save the life of a 13-year-old patient suffering from a severe brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured cerebral vascular malformation. This is one of the causes of stroke that is often overlooked in children.

Patient Tran BC (13 years old, residing in Son Tra district, Da Nang city) suddenly fainted while practicing performing arts at school and was taken to Da Nang Hospital in a state of deep coma and respiratory failure.

Diagnostic imaging showed a large intracranial hemorrhage, severely compressing brain tissue. The team of doctors from the Department of Neurosurgery, in coordination with the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, performed emergency surgery to open the skull, remove the hematoma and relieve the pressure, helping to reduce intracranial pressure and save the patient's life.

After surgery, the patient underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA), which identified a complex vascular malformation with aneurysm at risk of rebleeding. Neurosurgeons, Diagnostic Imaging and Anesthesiologists continued to perform radical surgery to remove the entire malformation and aneurysm.

Thanks to the smooth coordination between the specialties, the patient recovered well, was alert, had almost normal limb movement and was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Tra Tan Hoanh, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Da Nang Hospital, said that stroke does not only occur in adults. In fact, the unit is receiving more and more cases of cerebral hemorrhage in children, mainly related to congenital vascular malformations. Early detection and treatment are key factors to save lives and limit sequelae.

"Parents should not be subjective to signs such as prolonged headaches, nausea, weakness in limbs, convulsions, and sudden loss of consciousness. In addition, regular health check-ups and cerebral vascular imaging are needed when abnormalities are suspected," said Dr. Tra Tan Hoanh.
