The Vatican has given an optimistic update on Pope Francis' health after he spent a 17th night in hospital being treated for pneumonia.

Pope Francis' health remained stable throughout March 2 and he was no longer on a ventilator, the Vatican said on the 89-year-old pontiff's progress, after he was hospitalized since February 14.
He was treated at Gemelli Hospital in Rome (Italy) for a severe respiratory infection that led to other complications. The initial bronchitis led to double pneumonia and there were also signs of kidney failure.
"The Holy Father's health condition remained stable throughout the day," the latest detailed update on the Pope's condition on March 2 said.
Accordingly, the Pope no longer needs to use what the Vatican calls "non-invasive ventilation", but continues to be provided with oxygen through a small tube placed under his nose.
The Vatican said the Pope did not have a fever on March 2, although doctors maintained a "cautious" prognosis due to the "complex clinical situation", meaning the Pope was not yet out of danger.
The Pope suffered a spasm of the airways on February 28, similar to an asthma attack, which required him to be drained and put on a ventilator temporarily. By March 1, the Vatican said his condition had stabilized.
He spent his 17th night in hospital, met two Vatican officials on the morning of March 2 and thanked those who had prayed and supported him in a written message.
"I want to thank you for your prayers," said a message released by the Vatican in place of the usual Sunday prayer service with pilgrims that he was unable to lead for the third consecutive week.
"I feel all your love and closeness," the message read.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Pope Francis also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's No. 2 official, and Parolin's deputy at the hospital on March 2, but did not provide further details about the meeting.
