Rice variety reduces diabetes

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng28/09/2024

White rice is notorious for its high glycemic index (GI). However, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines has developed a rice variety with a low GI of around 25, while still being high in protein and not causing diabetes. The new variety looks like white rice but has smaller grains. IRRI researchers screened 380 seed samples over 10 years to select genes that have a lower GI and higher protein content.

Dr Nese Sreenivasulu from IRRI said that if we could come up with a low GI diet that is considered healthier, not just for people with diabetes and pre-diabetes, it would be a very good intervention to combat the rising cases of diabetes. The IRRI project is still being tested in the Philippines, with the hope of being commercially available within the next two years. An estimated 537 million adults on the planet are living with diabetes, and this number is expected to rise to 783 million in the next 20 years.
