The Vietnam Record Organization (Vietkings) has just awarded a record certificate to Ly Son district (now Ly Son special zone, Quang Ngai province) on June 20, with the content: "Tan Tomb - Ly Son district: The place to preserve and display 2 whale skeletons restored on the largest island in Vietnam."

These two whale skeletons are being kept at the Lang Tan relic, dating back 250-300 years. The larger skeleton is 22m long, and is called “Dong Dinh Dai Vuong” by the locals.

The smaller skeleton is 18m long and is called "Duc Ngu Nhi Vi Ton Than." Each skeleton consists of 50 vertebrae, 28 ribs and the head.

Since 2020, the Ly Son island government has implemented a project to restore two whale skeletons and build an exhibition house at Tan Lang.

By 2022, the restoration of the two skeletons was completed. Ly Son has increased the introduction to tourists about the Tan Lang relic and the two whale skeletons kept at the Lang.

According to Ly Son people, there are dozens of whale skeletons being preserved on the island. However, only two sets of “Dong Dinh Dai Vuong” and “Duc Ngu Nhi Vi Ton Than” which have just been set as records are still intact and have been completely restored.

Along with preserving and conserving, Ly Son people also maintain the whale worship belief, a beautiful feature in the culture of the coastal villagers.

Lang Tan, where the two largest whale skeletons in Vietnam are kept, is an attractive destination, attracting tourists on their journey to explore the volcanic island of Ly Son./.
