On the morning of July 21, Dr. Vo Trong Phuc - Deputy Director of M'Drak Medical Center - said that in recent days, the unit has received dozens of patients with symptoms of digestive disorders, suspected of food poisoning. Many patients with symptoms reported that they ate bread at a local shop.
Previously, on the evening of July 18, the Emergency Department of M'Drak Medical Center received 6 patients with symptoms of digestive disorders, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Through medical history, 3 of them said they had eaten bread from a facility in residential group 7, M'Drak commune.
On July 19, the center continued to record 39 more cases with similar symptoms, of which 35 people also said they had eaten bread at the same location.
As of the morning of July 21, a total of 64 patients scattered throughout the commune had been hospitalized. Of these, 38 people claimed to be related to the aforementioned sandwich shop.
The hospitalized patients ranged in age from 3 to 59 years old. Most came from different villages in M'Drak commune.
Speaking further about this, Dr. Phuc said that the health condition of the patients has been relatively stable. "It is expected that 5 patients will be discharged this morning, the remaining cases will continue to be monitored and treated in the next 1-2 days," Dr. Phuc said.
According to the deputy director of M'Drak Medical Center, because there are 64 cases of diarrhea and digestive disorders in a short period of time, the center is suspecting a seasonal diarrhea outbreak in the area. The work of monitoring, preventing the epidemic and educating people not to panic is being urgently implemented.
"We are monitoring the epidemic situation and working closely with relevant units to control the risk of spreading in the community," said Dr. Phuc.
Take samples of bread establishments for testing
Immediately after recording suspected cases of food poisoning, M'Drak Medical Center coordinated with M'Drak Commune People's Committee to establish a surprise inspection team at T. Bread Factory, where many suspected cases of food poisoning were recorded. Through the inspection, the team assessed that the processing area was hygienic, had glass cabinets to cover the food, and the owner of the factory had been trained in food safety.
However, the facility has not yet presented a contract or documents proving the origin of the food ingredients. The person directly selling the products does not have a health certificate and does not use gloves when processing. The inspection team has drawn up a report, taken food samples for testing and requested the facility to temporarily suspend operations until further notice.
