The abandoned house of the last Queen Mother of the Nguyen Dynasty

Located on the banks of the An Cuu River, the 2-storey French-style house at 145 Phan Dinh Phung, Hue City, was the residence until the end of her life of Queen Mother Doan Huy Hoang Tu Cung, the last Queen Mother of the Nguyen Dynasty and mother of King Bao Dai. Now overgrown with grass, it has been abandoned for many years, causing many people to regret.

This house was built in French architecture, with yellow painted walls. After many different owners, it was later bought by Mrs. Tu Cung in 1955 and lived here until her death in 1980.

Before her death, Empress Dowager Tu Cung wished to hand over this house to the local government.

After taking over, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center displayed some of the artifacts of Lady Tu Cung to introduce the work that was associated with a part of the life of the last Queen Mother in the history of Vietnamese feudal dynasties.

By 2014, considering that the worship and display of artifacts of Lady Tu Cung in the above house were not appropriate, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center moved related artifacts to An Dinh Palace, one of the architectural works of Hue recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage, nearby.

Inside the house, the walls showed signs of mold, and the remaining photos were covered in dust, showing that no one had managed or preserved them.

After the altar and artifacts were moved to An Dinh Palace for display, the house of Lady Tu Cung was handed over by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center to another unit for coffee business.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic causing business losses, this unit returned the house. Since then, the harsh weather and lack of regular use have caused this house to show signs of serious deterioration.

A nearby resident said the house used to display some relics but was later moved elsewhere, leaving the house empty. Years of neglect and lack of cleaning had left the house gloomy.
