On July 1, the Department of General Surgery - Can Tho General Hospital informed that doctors at the hospital performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the gallbladder of a 64-year-old female patient, removing more than 1,100 gallstones from her gallbladder.

Accordingly, patient LTM, born in 1957 (residing in Luc Sy Thanh commune, Tra On district, Vinh Long province) was admitted to Can Tho General Hospital on the morning of June 26. Through clinical examination and ultrasound, the patient was diagnosed with chronic cholecystitis due to multiple gallstones and indicated for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The patient's family said that about 3 years ago, the patient was diagnosed with gallstones. However, because the patient was afraid of surgery, he let the disease linger, and every time he had pain, he bought medicine to control it. About a month ago, the pain got worse, so the patient was taken to the hospital for treatment and surgery.

After surgery, the patient's health gradually stabilized and he recovered well. During the surgery to remove the gallbladder and cut open the gallbladder, doctors here recorded more than 1,100 stones forming in the patient's gallbladder.

According to Dr. La Van Phu, Head of the General Surgery Department, Can Tho General Hospital, this is the case with the largest number of gallstones ever recorded at the hospital. Fortunately, the patient was operated on in time. In case of acute cholecystitis, complications of necrosis, and gallbladder perforation, it is very difficult to treat.

In addition, Dr. La Van Phu recommends that gallstones are a fairly common disease. If diagnosed and treated early by laparoscopic surgery, the results are usually good. On the contrary, if left untreated for a long time, it can be life-threatening. Therefore, people with gallstones who have pain symptoms should go to the hospital for early surgery to avoid unfortunate complications.
