Mr Pezeshkian, a moderate, will be sworn in on July 30, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Mr Pezeshkian is expected to thaw Iran's relationship with the West.

Mr Pezeshkian's top economic goal will be to escape harsh US sanctions, reimposed after Washington scrapped Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

"To deal with global issues, we need to act proactively and effectively... priorities must be followed, with the current priority being economic issues," Khamenei said.

Mr Pezeshkian is the successor to hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash last May.
