Then Kin Mang Festival in Muong Troi

“Bundles of gold are everywhere at the foot of the hill/ Boys and girls from the village come back to the Then festival”, that is the proverb about the unique Then Kin Pang festival of the Thai people in Khong Lao commune, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province. The White Thai people in Khong Lao commune believe that heaven is a Muong, in which there are Then gods. Then gods are all tolerant and generous, so every year they come down to earth to save people. Those who are sick will be given medicine by Then, those who are in trouble or have bad luck will be prayed for by Then to overcome their misfortune. Then Kin Pang festival is an occasion for the villagers to offer Then thanksgiving, held periodically at the beginning of the rainy season on the 10th day of the third lunar month every year.

Entering the ceremony, the qualified person elected by the villagers wears Then costume, plays the Tinh Tau lute and looks majestic like a general. Surrounding them are the virgins chosen to be Sao Chau, all of whom are beautiful and know how to dance and sing to welcome the gods down to earth to have fun. The actions of offering flowers, making offerings, inviting wine, and the Then performances are like a dialogue with the gods in heaven with undying faith.

At the end of the ceremony, Then and the Sao Chau danced the Quat Bo Wii (sweeping withered flowers) dance. This is the belief in reincarnation in the folk beliefs of the White Thai people here. But the most bustling and exciting part is the water-splashing festival to pray for rain at Nam Lum stream after the Then worshiping ceremony. Thousands of people join in the water-splashing festival to cheer in the water-splashing fun. The locals believe that the wetter the person gets, the luckier they will be. According to the Thai people, the stream is where Then is reincarnated from heaven to earth to save humanity. Each person participating in the water-splashing festival seems to feel the harmony between heaven and earth and hopes that the next year's crops will be good. This is also an opportunity for young couples to meet and express their love through songs. After the festival, many of them became husband and wife.
