In late June and early July, people began to appear on the online market selling small, pretty, and fragrant wax meat.
Because it is early in the season, wax apples are still rare and expensive, each kg of wax apples costs up to 150,000 VND/kg. In other words, each tiny apple costs from 15,000 to 18,000 VND.
Although expensive, wax flowers are still sought after by many women to display on the altar or to use in ceremonies.
In season, Hanoians often display a small plate of thit on the tea table, the fragrant scent wafting through conversations with friends over a cup of freshly brewed morning tea.
In addition to being sold by weight, mini wax apples are also sold by the set, priced at 125,000 VND/tray of 10 lovely apples.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, residing in Dong Da, Hanoi, said that normally star fruit often appears in the fall, around August and September of the solar calendar, but for about a week now, she has seen attractive, golden star fruit being sold on the online market. Finding it strange, she also ordered 10 fruits for 150,000 VND.
“The star apple is round, golden yellow, small and pretty but has a strong aroma. I brought it home and displayed it on a tray, burned incense, and put it in a woolen basket hanging in the bedroom. It felt very pleasant,” said Ms. Huong.
Ms. Giang, an online fruit seller in Hai Ba Trung (Hanoi), said that for about a week now, she has started collecting wax from sources to sell according to pre-orders.
Usually, Ms. Giang pays for the order every 3-4 days, depending on the amount of wax meat she collects. Ms. Giang admits that it is still the beginning of the season, so wax meat is quite rare and expensive.
Customers usually buy from 5 to 10 fruits.
Ms. Thanh (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) said that normally star fruit often appears in the fall (August-September of the solar calendar), but these past few days she saw online markets selling small, flat, golden star fruit.
According to Ms. Thanh, star apples have been associated with her childhood for 20-30 years. At that time, almost every house in her hometown had a star apple tree in the corner of the garden. The tree was tall and very difficult to pick, so when the season came, the star apples fell yellow at the base. Children picked them up, played with them until they were bored, then they would squeeze and squeeze them, then dig a hole, put their mouths in to suck out the golden pulp inside.
“Back then, after eating the fruit, I would chew on the seeds. The seeds were as hard as rocks but I could still chew them. Now, when I see the fruit, I remember my childhood and buy some. In the past, this fruit was given away but now it is more expensive than American grapes,” Thanh shared.
In addition to selling a set of wax apples including green, unripe and ripe fruits in a bamboo basket or tray with a table cover for 220,000 - 230,000 VND/set of 15 fruits, equivalent to 190,000 - 200,000 VND/kg. In addition, wax apples are also sold retail for 15,000 VND/fruit and also sell branches of wax apples used to put in vases for customers in need.
