Why Elon Musk shared a clip of a Japanese female office worker

Elon Musk likened the new Grok Imagine to “Vine in the age of AI”, using a clip of a Japanese female office worker as an example to clarify his ambition to reshape short-form content on the X platform.

Short video about Japanese female office worker goes viral.

Elon Musk recently announced the latest feature of AI chatbot Grok called Grok Imagine, which allows creating short videos using artificial intelligence. This is reminiscent of Vine, the video creation tool that was once a hit on social networks.

On the X platform, the tech billionaire declared Grok Imagine to be the AI Vine, implicitly comparing the tool to the legendary short video service that Twitter once owned. The new feature, which is in the testing phase, allows users to input image content or scene descriptions, and Grok Imagine will then create a complete video with sound.

While there's no official release date yet, Grok Imagine is currently available to some SuperGrok subscribers for $30 /month. Others can sign up to get on the waitlist.

Grok Imagine's emergence not only targets the popular short-form video trend, but also raises the possibility that Vine could make a comeback.

"By the way, we just found the archive of the Vine video and are working to restore access for users, so you can re-post it if you want," Musk added.

The announcement has many questioning whether X is actually reviving Vine. It's unclear whether former users will be able to access their accounts and content again, or if they'll just be able to view old videos as a temporary archive. A spokesperson for the X platform did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Vine was launched in 2012, allowing users to record and share six-second videos. Although it closed in 2017, the platform was considered the cradle of many trends and online phenomena before the short-video boom. The revival of the Vine archive and the launch of Grok Imagine could be a sign that the Tesla CEO wants to make short-form content the centerpiece of X's social network, with the full support of AI.
