The strategy is part of a comprehensive reform program to strengthen the national education system.
To boost the effectiveness of the model, the Malaysian government and education sector will re-evaluate teaching quality, enhance teacher training and optimize class hours.
“Preschools will focus on teaching English not just as a subject, but as a communication tool. In addition, schools will expand language teaching,” said Anwar Ibrahim.
Ms Abdul Rahim, President of Parents Action Group for Education (PAGE), expressed support for the new regulation, calling it a “timely and necessary” reform.
“The policy can significantly improve children’s school attendance and enhance their literacy, numeracy and social development. Compulsory education also helps to narrow the gap between rich and poor students,” the expert said.
However, Ms. Abdul Rahim emphasized the importance of accessibility and preparedness in the early childhood education sector. Currently, early childhood infrastructure and resources in some localities are lacking. Moreover, although education for children aged 5 is compulsory, it is impossible to create pressure to study too early.
