In a settlement reached on July 30, Meta Group agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit in which the state of Texas accused the social media giant of violating privacy laws with its feature of “tagging” friends in photos on Facebook.
Under the agreement, Meta agreed to pay the above amount within 5 years to resolve complaints that the technology "giant" illegally collected biometric data of Facebook users in Texas.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the deal "historic," the largest settlement ever for a lawsuit brought by a single state.
Texas filed the lawsuit in early 2022, Attorney General Paxton said. It was the first time the state had sued a tech company for violating the Biometric Identification Information Collection or Use Act.
According to the lawsuit, the state of Texas alleges that Meta did not get users' permission before its software began identifying and tagging people in photos. This identification and tagging feature has been deployed since 2011.
In a response the same day, a Meta spokesperson said the group agreed to resolve the above issue, and at the same time wanted to seek future opportunities to expand business investments in Texas, including the prospect of developing data centers.
