During talks in Washington, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo expressed concerns about the two countries' trade and investment policies, but stressed their commitment to maintaining communication channels between the two sides.

According to a statement from China's Ministry of Commerce, Mr. Wang Wentao expressed concerns about US export controls in the semiconductor sector, as well as suggested that Washington review overseas investments for security reasons.

The US Commerce Department also said that officials from the two countries had “frank and substantive” discussions, including on “the overall environment in both countries for trade and investment as well as potential areas of cooperation.”

“Secretary Gina Raimondo also raised concerns about a series of recent actions by China against US companies operating in the country,” the US Department of Commerce said.

Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao's visit to the United States is the first trip by a senior Chinese official to Washington since 2020.

Tensions between China and the United States flared up this week when the G7 group of industrialized nations met in Hiroshima, issuing a statement criticizing China on security issues, such as its militarization of the South China Sea and “economic coercion” in trade.

China responded sharply, accusing the G7 of trying to contain other countries. China also announced a ban on its information infrastructure companies buying chips made by US memory chip maker Micron Technology, in what is seen as Beijing's response to Washington's restrictions on sales of advanced semiconductors to China.
