Russia-Belarus have new moves on nuclear weapons

Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov announced that Moscow and Minsk have added a clause on nuclear weapons to the Bilateral Security Treaty.

It is expected that by the end of this year, a new security concept of the Russian-Belarusian Union State will be adopted by the two countries, during which the two sides will sign an agreement on security guarantees.

In an interview with Russia's RIA news agency, Ambassador Gryzlov said that the security concept of the Union State is a comprehensive doctrinal document that provides a conceptual assessment of the difficult changes in the geopolitical situation and the role of the Union State in the emerging political -military structure of the world.

According to him, the need to update this concept is obvious for both Russia and Belarus, given the growing regional and global instability, as well as the efforts that the Union State's strategic rivals are making to harm both Minsk and Moscow.

The newly added provision will involve the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus as an effective tool aimed at military deterrence of aggression and provocations on the Union State's western borders.

The treaty aims to turn the borders of the Union State into a unified defense space, with provisions guiding the parties' actions in the event of a real threat to the sovereignty of one or both states.

Mr. Gryzlov said that the two sides are actively finalizing the text of the Treaty and the new security concept of the Union State in connection with global and regional instability as well as attempts by strategic rivals to harm Russia and Belarus.

Some of the innovations outlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting on nuclear deterrence on September 25 this year will also be incorporated into the text of the treaty. The diplomat stressed that both sides have a common vision for the treaty.
