People continue to block vehicles from entering An Hiep landfill (Vinh Long) due to environmental pollution.

On the afternoon of July 21, dozens of residents living around the An Hiep landfill area (An Hiep commune, Vinh Long province) gathered to block garbage trucks from entering the landfill, protesting the environmental pollution that has lasted for many years without being resolved.

Speaking to SGGP reporter, Mr. Bui Tuan An, Chairman of An Hiep Commune People's Committee, said that at around 2:00 p.m. the same day, a garbage truck arrived at An Hiep landfill to process garbage as planned, but was prevented by local residents, not allowing the truck to enter the landfill area.

Immediately afterwards, the local authorities were present to mobilize and propagate, and at the same time promised the people that tomorrow (July 22), representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province and related sectors would coordinate to organize a field survey at the landfill, directly meet and dialogue with the people to find a solution. After being mobilized, the people agreed to disperse, and the garbage truck was forced to return.

According to residents living around the area, in recent days, heavy rains have caused leachate from the An Hiep landfill to escape, emitting a foul odor, seriously affecting the daily life and health of the community. Although residents have repeatedly petitioned and reported to authorities at all levels, the pollution situation still recurs, especially during the rainy season.

This is the third time in three consecutive years (July 2023, July 2024 and now July 2025) that local residents have blocked garbage trucks out of frustration over recurring pollution.

There are currently about 132 households living within a 1,000m radius of the An Hiep landfill, most of whom are affected by air and water pollution. “The stench is so strong at night, the black water flows into the fields, people can’t stand it anymore,” said an indignant resident.
