Arab Americans do not support two US presidential candidates

In a statement, the Arab American Political Action Committee (AAPAC) said it would not support incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris or Donald Trump in the race for the White House. The reason is that both candidates support Israel in the conflict with the Hamas Islamist movement in the Gaza Strip and with Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.

AAPAC is a group of Arab-American intellectuals based in Dearborn, Michigan, which has a large Palestinian and Lebanese American population. AAPAC often engages in political activities to protect the interests of Arabs in the United States as well as other countries around the world , and has long called on the US government to come up with concrete solutions to end these conflicts.

AAPAC endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, and has traditionally supported Democrats. This year, the group said, “neither candidate represents our hopes and dreams as Arab Americans. Both support the genocide in Gaza and the war in Lebanon.”

According to US media, if this happens, the US presidential election on November 5 will mark the first time this group has not supported a candidate since its founding in 1998.

Recent polls show a tight race between Harris and Trump. Arab and Muslim Americans are among the communities that overwhelmingly support Joe Biden in the 2020 race for the White House. However, their support for the Democratic Party has been waning over the US’s support for Israel in the Gaza conflict.

Meanwhile, support for Trump among Arab Americans has been consistently low, largely due to his statements and policies during his time in office regarding the travel ban on citizens of several Muslim-majority countries. In addition, Trump has also voiced support for Israel in the conflict in Gaza.
